The Foundation

the mater foundation

The Friends of the Mater Foundation is a charitable trust established in 1999 to support the work of the Mater Hospital.

Our mission is to provide funding to support
 the Mater’s compassionate approach to healthcare and to contribute to the highest standard of patient care, education and medical research at the hospital. We have a focus on supporting priority needs of the hospital, particularly those that cannot be funded through the hospital’s capital expenditure budget.

As the principal fundraising arm of the Mater Hospital, The Foundation has facilitated gifts in excess of $50 million since its inception. This is in large part due to an extraordinary donation in 2006 of $40 million, made by Mr Greg Poche AO, for the establishment of The Poche Centre, home to the Melanoma Institute Australia.

Each year, grant applications are sought from medical clinicians, nurses and allied health professionals across the campus. Funds are allocated to areas and projects that will have maximum impact on the delivery of high quality patient care.

Among our achievements, the Foundation has assisted the Mater to:

  • purchase new and much-needed medical equipment;
  • establish new facilities;
  • secure academic appointments in medical and surgical oncology;
  • deliver education programs; and
  • implement ground-breaking research projects across the Mater campus
